The first presidential proclamation for Human Trafficking Prevention Month was issued in 2010 and is now observed every January to raise awareness about human trafficking and its prevention. Victims of human trafficking are most often of adolescent age, and more than 100,000 children are trafficked each year. Children and youth in foster care are disproportionately victimized with as many as 4 out of 5 victims of trafficking having spent time in foster care.

CASA/GAL volunteers are trained to recognize the risk factors for human trafficking and are provided with resources to help prevent exploitation. Care and concern from a trusted figure can prevent a child’s exploitation, and CASA and GAL volunteers are a consistent presence in the lives of children and youth. The Administration for Children & Families and National Human Trafficking Hotline are important resources to learn more about how to identify and help prevent human trafficking.
