This week, the National CASA/GAL Association has begun the first book in the Parental Incarceration Learning Series Book Club, The Shadow System: Mass Incarceration and the American Family by Sylvia A. Harvey. The Shadow System follows the lives of three families as they attempt to survive familial separation as a result of incarceration. This book illuminates how America's criminal justice system, child welfare system and education system shape the lives of children with an incarcerated parent.
Independent reading started on January 9th and our bi-weekly book club discussions will begin on January 23rd.
